Toccoa resident named as victim of fatal early-morning pedestrian-involved incident in Athens

Sidney James Batchelor, 69, was struck by a commercial truck while crossing the Atlanta Highway

On Friday, Sidney James Batchelor, 69, a Toccoa resident and an employee at the Toccoa Walmart, was struck by a commercial box truck as he was crossing Atlanta Highway near Mall Access Road in Athens at approximately 3:30 a.m.

According to statements made by Athens Police Lt. John Radford, Batchelor was crossing the road from the RaceTrac parking lot to the Perimeter Inn Motel when the crash occurred.

On Thursday evening, the The Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission issued an Emergency Order, which was widely publicized as one of the first mandatory 24/7 curfews implemented in the face of the COVID-19 response.

No charges have been filed against the driver of the truck, who remained on scene.
