The inspections are part of the Department of Public Health's Environmental Health Inspection program that reviews and grades restaurants, pools and hotels on a wide range of health and safety criteria. Some of the health and safety regulations include "requiring permits to serve food, keeping items at correct temperatures to prevent pathogen growth and ensuring employees meet standards of cleanliness," according to the Department of Public Health. Scores are assigned following the inspection, with points deducted from a potential top score of 100. A score of 70 is considered failing, and a re-inspection will be scheduled to allow the facility to address and correct the violations. Repeat scores below 70 can result in suspension of the facility's food handling permit.

Routine risk based inspections of food service establishments are conducted to ensure they are operated in a safe and sanitary manner. The CDC has designated five broad categories of risk factors contributing to food-borne illness. The risk factors include improper holding temperatures, inadequate cooking, food from unsafe sources, poor personal hygiene, and contaminated equipment. The state’s regulations and related inspection activities are a critical component of preventing food-borne illness.

Conducted by Stephens County Environmental Health Services, which is a part of the Stephens County Public Health Department, these inspections help to ensure establishments are following safe food handling procedures and meeting all required processes and procedures to avoid food contamination and other safety concerns. Each restaurant or food service entity in the county is inspected roughly twice per year, according to the Stephens County Environmental Health Services Director.

A total of 95 establishments are listed on the Stephens County Environmental Health Inspection database. Toccoa/Stephens County ConnectLocal.News will report monthly on new inspections, and is formatting a table of all facilities and their last two scores that will be available for the public in our Connect Data section. All 95 facilities are expected to be added to the database by Jan. 15.
