New to gun ownership? Get free safety and basic marksmanship lessons from SCSO

The next free Stephens County Sheriff's Office Civilian Firearms Safety Course wil be offered on Friday, April 3, from 1 - 5 p.m.

The following information was released by Lt. Stephen Stewart, head of the SCSO Office of Professional Standards and Training:


The Stephens County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) Civilian Firearms Safety Course is a FREE four-hour class geared specifically toward those who are new to firearms ownership and/or carry. You’ll learn the basics of firearms ownership, legal issues, safe handling and storage, and the fundamentals of marksmanship.


There will be an afternoon session at the SCSO Training Center on Friday, April 3rd. 1pm - 5pm


Class size is limited to twenty people per session, and applications will be accepted on a first-come/first-served basis, pending completion of the background checks. All applicants beyond the class size will be placed on a waiting list and utilized to fill any last-minute vacancies due to cancellations, etc.


Participant Requirements:

  • Must be 21 years of age or older; a person 18 - 20 years old may attend with a family member who is 21 or older and is also a participant in the course.

  • Must be a current Stephens County citizen.

  • Must have a valid photo ID and pass a criminal background check.

  • Approved revolvers or semi-automatics only; weapon must be free of defects and subject to inspection. No derringer-type (open trigger) pistols

  • Participants must provide their own weapons and ammunition (at least 50 rounds). Calibers ranging from .22 to .45 are acceptable (rimfire or centerfire cartridges only; no black powder).

  • An approved belt holster, worn on the shooter’s strong side must be used at all times. Holsters designed for cross draw, inside the waistband, small of the back, shoulder, ankle, etc. are prohibited.

Applications will be accepted until Friday, March 27th at the SCSO at the Courthouse, located at 70 N. Alexander Street Suite 205, Toccoa, GA 30577. Applications must be submitted in person.Complete information will be provided upon acceptance to course.
