Citizen tip leads to meth trafficking arrests

Stephens County Sheriff’s Office has arrested three Toccoa men on methamphetamine charges. Thomas Clifford Burnette (age 55) and Roger Jackson (age 59) both of Toccoa, were charged with Conspiracy to Traffic Methamphetamine. Jackson was also charged with Possession of methamphetamine. Shane Burrell (age 49) also of Toccoa, was charged with Trafficking Methamphetamine as well as Possession of Methamphetamine with the intent to distribute.


Following is Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley’s description of the arrest, as provided to ConnectLocal.news today, Feb. 4.


”On January 28th 2020, Investigators with Stephens County Sheriff’s Office were following up on a tip of drug activity at 3833 Hwy 123 - the residence of Roger Jackson. While Investigators were speaking with the individuals on scene a Green Jeep driven by Shane Burrell of Toccoa pulled into the driveway. Burrell was asked to step out of the vehicle at that time an Investigator noticed a taped up bundle in the floorboard of the Jeep. 


”A K9 Deputy performed a free air sniff of the Jeep and the K9 alerted to the odor of narcotics.


”Based off of this alert along with other information gathered while speaking to several other persons on scene, investigators were able to obtain a search warrant for the Jeep, along with a shop and camper on the property. During the subsequent search deputies found drug packaging materials, digital scales and a small amount of Methamphetamine inside of the camper and shop. Deputies unwrapped the taped bundle from the floorboard of the jeep and discovered that it contained approximately 150 grams of methamphetamine. All of these items were gathered by investigators as evidence. 


“After further investigation Thomas Clifford Burnette (age 55) and Roger Jackson (age 59) both of Toccoa, were charged with Conspiracy to Traffic Methamphetamine. Jackson was also charged with Possession of methamphetamine. Shane Burrell (age 49) also of Toccoa, was charged with Trafficking Methamphetamine as well as Possession of Methamphetamine with the intent to distribute. All three were transported to Stephens County Jail and are awaiting a bond hearing.”
